I don't know why Martina told us (rightly) that it's not a typo for Schalotte, and then selected an answer claiming that it was a typo.

Oh, I see. It's not a typo, and the Schlotten are the tops of scallions/green onions/spring onions.
I assumed Schlotte was the heading, but it apparently isn't.

It appears that Schalotte has two translations: shallot, and scallion (US)/spring onion (UK). We therefore need a picture or a Latin name.

I'm almost certain it's a typo.

agree Armorel Young : if it's Winterzwiebel then that - paradoxically - is what we call spring onions and others call scallions

I simply looked at th English Wiki link, so it seems to be so. Spring onions is also a U.S term for them.

I've heard that one, too. Scallions seems to be the more widespread term, though.

See the discussion box. Schlotte is not a typo for Schalotte, but the green part of the plant that grows above ground.

Schlotten are not peculiar to just shallots or scallions. All types of onions have leaves.

This is close to the German and would be used in this botanical context.

Edit: Closest to "Schlotten" is probably "hollow stems." Botanically, "shoots" are the aboveground plant parts. In common speech, "shoots" mean the first part of a plant that appears above the earth, in this case the hollow stems, which release their pungent odor when cut.
