German term

Normabweichung

German to English Tech/Engineering Computers: Software project time management program
"...Das Erfassen der Projektzeiten wird überprüft. Die Registerkarte ***"Normabweichungen"*** wird freigeschaltet (vgl. "Registerkarte Normabweichungen auf Seite B-7"). In dieser Registerkarte können Sie Zeitpunkte für das Versenden von Normabweichungen festlegen..." I'm working on a project that someone else started, and think the previous translator's interpretation is too "literal", i.e. "word-for-word". If I remember back to Statistics 101, we used another term, which I don't want to poison your minds with. Your help and input is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Joe

IYou don't say what the previous translation was. Is this also 'too literal'?

disagree David Willett : "Standard deviation" is the translation of "Standardabweichung", a purely statistical term in both languages. "Normabweichung" has a far broader meaning and is unlikely to refer to the closely defined "standard deviation".

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "It is indeed relating to statistics."

deviation from standard

This may be what is needed, as "standard deviation(s)" is a term closely associated with statistics, and your context does not make clear whether the text has to do with statistics or not. If it does NOT have to do with statistics, you could use this to avoid the reader immediately jumping to the wrong conclusion. If it DOES, then this argument is obviously invalid, and only you know that...

agree David Willett : Another possibility might be something like "anomaly".
