Thanks a lot for your replies and comments. I do like Ian's 'cutting someone down to size' and Cilian's 'getting the upper hand over someone' and I'll certainly add these to my personal dictionary. But my four points go to Andrew's 'stealing a march on someone' for a touch of class that fit my context wonderfully well.

This means to "put someone in his/her place" / "cut someone down to size". I'd prefer the latter here.

I have to admit that I find the three other suggestions so far a bit aggressive.

"I like "hold its own". Admittedly, it's just gut feeling, but I find "in the Schranken weisen" not quite as strong as "cut down to size" etc. But I freely admit that I would have phrased the German sentence differently.
