German term

Lösungsunmöglichkeit

Some of the other possibilities given at http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=impasse
are: deadlock, dead end, stalemate, standstill, blind alley, cul de sac and dead-end street.
But my preference is for 'impasse'.
Peer comment(s):

agree avantix : I'd use impasse here, since that's also quite well understood on international level

Thanks, avantix. This reminds me of when a British reporter asked General H. Norman 'Storming Norman' Schwarzkopf, Jr whether the road to Basra was ‘impassable’ and he replied: “What do you mean – impossible?”
agree Christine Lam : with impasse

agree Ingeborg Gowans (X) : impasse is a good choice here, way to go Andrew

neutral archtrans : but does impasse work with objective, subjective, and dispositive (whatever that means) ?

agree Maureen Millington-Brodie : very elegant unless they really want "solution impossibility"

agree Brie Vernier : Well, serves him right if he pronounced "impassable" as "impossible"! : )

I would passably agree with you...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Excellent. Thanks. For those who are curious, a "dispositive" impasse is one in which there is no solution for the crisis under the given general project conditions (costs, deadlines, contents). I found this at http://teacher.schule.at/summer/joerg/inhalte/Krisenmanagement.pdf. "
