German term

senkrecht zum Gefälle

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering floor treatment machine
Context: "Vorsicht beim Wenden auf Steigungen / Gefällen: langsam und vorsichtig fahren. Bei Steigung > 2% darf nur senkrecht zum Gefälle gefahren werden, wenden verboten!"

Maybe it's just deadline panic seizing my brain, but I can't for the life of me grasp the geometry in this statement.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +3 directly in line with the gradient
3 +2 perpendicular to the gradient

polyphonia (asker) Mar 27, 2006:
But can someone explain the geometry to me? I was considering "perpendicular to the gradient" before I posted my question, as it seemed to work linguistically, but I got cold feet over my inability to make sense of the geometrical relations.

directly in line with the gradient

i.e. not at an angle to the gradient, probably because that would involve a risk of toppling over.

"Senkrecht" in the sense of perpendicular makes no sense (to me) since it would mean driving up into the air or down into the ground :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree David Moore (X) : It's a sound physical principle; if you face uphill or downhill, the heavy machine is easier to control than if you are facing sideways to the slope. So it's less a danger of toppling than of loss of control.

Good to see that someone else to thinking laterally as opposed to vertically :-)
agree Kim Metzger : So it's not a hovercraft.

and not a VTOL machine either :-)

perpendicular to the gradient

I believe, but our engineers may object.

disagree David Moore (X) : Yes Kim, I do - sorry...Think about it: the machine will always be perpendicular to the slope, won't it?
