German term

membrangängig

Claim in a patent application for a dialysis machine:

I assume it means a substance is able/unable to cross the membrane. Is there a technical term for it? A related English application refers to "a solute" but never mentions crossing the membrane. Would the term fit for membrangängiger Stoff?

Peer comment(s):

neutral Ken Cox : The term may well be used, but IMO it's undesirable (the membrane is permeable to the substance, but the substance permeates the membrane). I'd much prefer 'membrane-permeating'.

able to pass through the membrane

I'm not aware of such a special English term (which does not mean that it doesn not exist), but solute is simply a dissolved substance, and that does not specify whether it can pass or not, so I would not use that.
