Discussion

Lancashireman Jun 25, 2015:
Plausible explanation. Maybe the asker can confirm the U.S. setting.
Marga Shaw Jun 25, 2015:
In addition "Schießgerät" is not that widely used in German where it is better known as "Biopsiepistole".

the US oncologist probably referred to it as "biopsy gun" in the first place, which the German-speaking patient translated into "Schießgerät". Now there is a translation into English required and we are back again at the start, i.e. biospy gun (as it is called/known here), i.e. in the USA.
Lancashireman Jun 25, 2015:
Obviously But the asker has stated his intention to retain the qualifying phrase "wie es hier genannt wird". I would recommend translating Schießgerät and omitting what follows.
Marga Shaw Jun 25, 2015:
@ Lancashireman I happen not to agree with you that "Schießgerät" should remain in German. The average English reader would probably not know at all what a "Schießgerät" is and for what it is used.
Ah, have a look at this:

The story seems to take us to the United States!
Marga Shaw Jun 25, 2015:
@Petrus You stated yourself that the gun is used for taking biopsies. "Biopsy gun" is the term used in this case, FWIW.
Lancashireman Jun 25, 2015:
hier "as they call it in these parts". But if your story (?) is set in a German-speaking country, then the answer is 'Schießgerät'.
Cillie Swart (asker) Jun 25, 2015:
qualifier Thanks biopsy gun sounds right but why then the qualifier?
Cillie Swart (asker) Jun 25, 2015:
qualifier yes definitely.
Lancashireman Jun 25, 2015:
"wie es hier genannt wird" Are you planning to include this qualifier in the translation?

biopsy gun

For core needle biopsy, a biopsy gun is guided to the lesion and fired; the spring-loaded inner needle advances into the lesion and obtains a small core of tissue. - See more at: http://www.healthcommunities.com/cancer-tests/breast-biopsy-...

Preoperative diagnosis of histology and receptor status is important in management of breast cancer. Percutaneous automated core biopsy with biopsy gun (Gun biopsy) was done in fifty patients with palpable breast lump in whom fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was either negative or not done In all patients adequate tissue for histology and receptor status studies was obtained forty-two patients had infiltrating duct carcinoma and eight patients had benign lesions on gun biopsy.

The titanium Semi-Automatic Biopsy Gun provides a high quality and intact core specimen for histo-pathologic analysis.

Currently, many surgeons prefer open excision biopsies for palpable lesions (6-8), while US-guided fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies or core biopsies with an automatic biopsy gun are widely used to diagnose non-palpable breast lesions.
