German term

Krötenauge

German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
From the same novel, a bit further on:
"Ich füllte das Glas mit Mineralwasser auf und hielt es so, daß ich von außen und von oben hineinschauen konnte. Silbern und grau. Winzige Luftbläschen stiegen an die Oberflächem sahen mich mit einem *Krötenauge* an und zerplatzten." How can air bubbles look at you with a toad's eye, or am I missing something?

goggle-eyed

That's how I imagine it.
Peer comment(s):

agree Hilary Davies Shelby : "and looked at me, goggle-eyed, before bursting" - edit: now when you put it like that, it really does sound kinda creepy ;-)

stared at me like toad's eyes

gave me a toads eye look

Just imagine the scene, the bubbles at the surface of the liqiuid that look like toad's eyes for all the world and then burst

looked at me like tiny fish eyes

It's sort of a freer translation.

frog-eyed

...a frog eyed look when they are in the up position), ...

Aspherical lenses are almost flat which eliminates the "frog-eyed" look.
