German term
Strichfassung
German to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
Theatre
A "Strichfassung" in German refers to (a copy of) a play that has been shortened by the (theatrical) director. The German "Strich" refers to the actual stroke which marks/crosses out the passage to be omitted in the play. The passages are not removed but remain on the paper and may be included again (i.e., the strokes removed or "aufgehoben" in German) at a later stage. I would very much appreciate if someone could provide the appropriate English term. Thank you so much in advance!

dramaturgical cut script
Yale Drama School, the premier university acting school in the US, calls this "dramaturgical cut script", as cutting the script is one of the functions of the dramaturg, the "worker of the text". However, this doesn't Google well, but that might be because it is ultra-specialized, and you don't specify the target language or culture. That's why only "medium confidence".
"The collection consists of production scripts from the Yale School of Drama, including dramaturgical cut scripts, early scripts, promptbooks, production books, and regular scripts."
From: http://drs.library.yale.edu:8083/HLTransformer/HLTransServle...
The Univ. of Newcastle (Australia) reference below merely mentions "revised scripts", but that may not be specific enough.
I actually was a dramaturg many years ago, but mostly worked as an assistant dramaturg in Germany, so I'm not 100% sure on how often this term really used in the English-speaking theater.

Sorry, left out an "is" in the last sentence: "...this term is really used..."

Also referenced by andres-larsen below, but I found it independently - a specific mention of *Strichfassung" in a list of tasks performed by the Dramaturg: "Bearbeitung und Übersetzung von Dramentexten; im Musiktheater Einrichtung von Opern oder Libretti (Strichfassung = Festlegung von Kürzungen)"
from Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramaturgie
The English "Dramaturgy" page in Wikipedia is not quite as detailed, but might also be of some use.
Translation is also a function of the dramaturg, which was part of my job.

I thought I sent an answer before, but it seems to have been lost in space... If it reached you, pls ignore this, otherwise here goes again: Thank you, I believe this is quite what I was looking for. I am dealing with an (Austrian) contract to be translated for guest (performers), i.e., it is all happening in Austria. You are right, German Wiki on Dramaturgie is rather more detailed than the English page. Anyway, I guess this will be IT. Thank you again! |

: How about 'the final cut'? For an EN readership, it is probably best to omit 'Dramaturg' (Drama? Urgh!).

Thanks, Andrew. Since this is a contract for an Austrian theater, dramaturg is fine. If it were for the US or UK, some accommodation would probably be appropriate.

: I think there's some confusion between "dramaturg" and "dramaturgical" here. The German says neither. Dramaturgical just means "pertaining to plays".

Not really. It's highly specialized language and has to do with the function of the dramaturg in the German-speaking theatre. Since this is for Austria, it is fine. I don't know about UK, but in the US the dramaturg doesn't carry nearly the same weight.
