Yes, one might try to follow the literal route but, when a suitable expression exists that is widely used, it is certainly a better choice. The text does not refer to the actual mechanical task of collecting money but to the ability of certain individuals to induce donations. That has long been established as "fundraising ability" (unfortunately, many say "capability", maybe believing that a longer word will sound more important???)
