Perhaps I am missing something, but the Spanish seems very peculiar. "Entender" is being used in a strange way, there is no clear referent for "nexo" and it is not at all clear why the "nexo" is "necesario".

It seems I am drfiting further an further away from the original as I work my way through this translation. I don't see any need for it to be "connecting link" - this just seems tautologous.
