at the time of the singing of the Hallel--the songs of praise

The Hallel (Hebrew for "praise") refers to Psalms 113-118 and are chanted as part of the Passover service. This is clearly what is being referred to here. (see reference)

The "songs of praise" following the dash is optional, but probably should be added if you don't think the reader will understand what "Hallel" refers to.

Suerte.

Instead of "songs of praise" you could also write "Psalms of praise" in your explanatory gloss.

Gracias, TSLL.
neutral Idoia Echenique : ok, except that bein a Roman Catholic rite, what they sing is the Easter Sunday "Hallelujah" or "Aleluia"

Well, given the fact that they are talking about the events leading up to Jesus' death, it would be appropriate to speak within a Jewish context. Remember, the Roman Catholic Church wasn't founded until after his death.
