I'm really lost here with several aspects of this passage. For my first question, I think this must mean that the bedridden person is given 1 peso so that he/she can eat, not that they have to pay 1 peso. Does anyone disagree with that interpretation?

Nothing to do with food!
Note from asker:
Phil: I had no idea dieta could be used this way. Thx! |

I assume it originally meant food allowance, but its meaning has evolved. Thanks.

: I wouldn't say it necessarily has nothing to do with food. In Puerto Rico our legislators are paid "dietas" when the House is in session, and it's an allowance to cover their meals and other expenses. It does appear to be paid TO the sick person.

fee
The social registration fee is one peso, a weekly payment of 20 cents and 80 monthly, and the fee for sick people in bed is one peso (I believe monthly) etc.
