Luke 2:26. "It had been revealed to him [Simeon] by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ." His words were the "Nunc dimittis" (now thou dost dismiss thy servant ...)
The death presumably is the "overdue" death from old age of Simeon, which has been long awaiting this moment.
That's the background, just how to translate is much less clear.

While "merodear" is best translated differently in other contexts, here I think the emphasis in on a ghostly presence.
I've chosen to emphasize the presence of Death by gendering it (rather than saying "itself"), because Death's 'curiosity' is an almost-human trait...
I have chosen "would still hover" rather than "would however hover" just to avoid the sound repetition and make it a bit more elegant. Another possibility is "the curious Death, would not reveal herself, yet would hover".
