English to Spanish: Tuberculosis Eradication Program General field: Science
Source text - English
Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium bovis. This organism can infect all warm blooded animals, but only some animals become maintenance/reservoir hosts. In the U.S., the reservoir hosts include cattle, buffalo, captive and free ranging cervids and a few exotic species found in zoos.
In animals, bovine tuberculosis is usually a chronic, debilitating disease associated with emaciation, lung disease, digestive signs and other symptoms. Clinical disease occurs most often in dairy cattle, but it is also seen in beef cattle and other species.
In humans, M. bovis can cause pulmonary tuberculosis and disseminated infections. Both conditions can be fatal if left untreated.
The bovine tuberculosis eradication program began in 1917, when approximately one out of every 20 slaughtered cattle had this disease. Humans also suffered from M. bovis infections, often from dinking unpasteurized milk and working around affected cattle. However, a few cases continue to be found and complete eradication remains elusive.

This study will test the safety and immunogenicity of the gp120/NefTat/AS02A vaccine candidate in individuals with chronic HIV-1 infection successfully treated with HAART. The rationale for this study is based on previous scientific experiments, including data indicating that this vaccine can elicit strong HIV-1-specific T cell immune responses in humans and monkeys and lead to a retardation of HIV-1 disease progression in animal models of HIV-1 infection.
The HIV vaccine to be administered during this study consists of three recombinant HIV clade B viral antigens: the envelope glycoprotein gp120 and two regulatory proteins, Nef and Tat.The antigens are formulated in a proprietary adjuvant, AS02A, comprised of two immunostimulants in an oil-in-water emulsion (gp120/NefTat/AS02A). The drugs will be given by intramuscular (IM) injection at a standard dose of 20 mg together with 0.5 ml of the AS02A adjuvant.

English to Spanish: Study - Hip Replacement General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Source text - English Objective:
The outcome of total hip replacement is potentially affected by the body mass index (BMI) of the patient. This study reviews the mid-term survival and clinical and radiological outcome of a large group of patients who had undergone cementless total hip replacement and compare the results in obese (BMI of over 30 kg/m2) and non-obese patients.
Patients & Methods:
Result review of 2338 consecutive primary cementless hip replacement which had been performed in 1971 patients with osteoarthritis between 1999 and 2008.
Patients were categorized in 2 groups: obese (BMI>30) and non-obese (BMI<30).
No individual was lost to follow-up.
All the procedures took place in a single hospital and surgery had been performed by one of two experienced surgeons.
All the patients had an ABG II cementless femoral component implanted.
Results:
The mean follow-up for all patients was 7.1 years (0 to 12.01).
The non-obese group showed a higher mean total Harris Hip Score (HHS), a significantly better hip flexion (p < 0.001), adduction (p = 0.010) and internal rotation (p = 0.007). No statistically significant difference in abduction (p = 0.183) or external rotation (p = 0.241).
No statistical difference was reported between the groups in the overall satisfaction with surgery (p = 0.127).
All of the femoral components in both groups had radiological evidence of stable bony ingrowth.
Conclusion:
The non-obese and obese groups in mid-term survival both achieve survival rates of over 97% at 10 years. Based on this evidence, the authors conclude that obese patients should not be denied total hip replacement simply on the basis of their obesity.
