Recuerdo haber leído alguna vez que hay individuos que usan el lenguaje para disimular lo que piensan, pero según mi experiencia son muchísimos más los que lo usan en lugar de pensar.
La conversación de un hombre de negocios debería regirse por menos reglas, y reglas más simples, que cualquier otra función del animal racional. Estas reglas son:
Ten algo que decir.
Dilo.
Cállate.
Empezar a hablar antes de saber qué pretende decir y seguir hablando después de que lo ha dicho puede enviar al propietario de un negocio a un juicio legal o a un asilo de caridad, y el primero es un atajo para el segundo. En mi empresa cuento con un departamento legal y me sale carísimo, pero lo tengo para evitarme problemas con la ley.
Está muy bien, cuando llamas por teléfono a una chica o cuando hablas con amigos en la sobremesa, platicar libremente, como en una excursión al campo en la que paras a cortar flores; pero en la oficina tus frases deben ocupar el menor espacio posible entre punto y punto. Olvídate de la introducción y de la retórica, y detente antes de empezar a repetir. Para descubrir pecadores necesitas predicar sermones breves, y los diáconos, por su parte, no creerán necesitarlos extensos. Deja que los tontos hablen primero y da a las mujeres la última palabra: lo sustancioso viene entre las dos rebanadas de pan. Desde luego, un toque de mantequilla en cada rebanada no tiene nada de malo, siempre que se la ofrezcas a un hombre al que le gusta la mantequilla.
También recuerda que es más fácil parecer sabio que hablar sabiamente. Di menos que lo que diga tu interlocutor y escucha más que lo que hables; porque cuando un hombre está escuchando, no habla de sí mismo y además halaga al que sí lo está haciendo. A la mayoría de los hombres les basta con un buen oyente, y a la mayoría de las mujeres con suficiente papel de escribir, para decir todo lo que saben. El dinero habla... pero no antes de que a su dueño se le suelte la lengua, y cuando esto pasa sus comentarios siempre son ofensivos. La pobreza también habla, pero nadie quiere escuchar lo que pueda decir.
