SINCLAIR C5 (63)
1985
Long before the Toyota Prius, Ford Focus, Nissan Leaf or Tesla, there was the Sinclair 5. Developed by British inventor Clive Sinclair, the C5 was a one-person battery-powered electric vehicle. But this environmentally friendly car-of-the-future quickly became a car-of-the-past after the British media gave it less than stellar reviews at its January debut, and safety groups voiced concerns about the C5’s vulnerability in traffic. Add to that, worries about low speed, short battery life, lack of weatherproofing and zero storage, and Sinclair quickly went from C5 to CU-later. Within three months, production was slashed by 90% and only 5,000 of the 14,000 were sold before Sinclair Vehicles ceased production that August.
PHILLIPS IN2IT (69)
1996
The Phillips In2it was supposed to be a personal communicator for children. Phillips even involved children during the design phase hoping girls would be In-2-it.
Featuring a touch-sensitive display, pen input, infrared communication and audio outputs, In2it apps included a weekly calendar, alarm clock and a photo album. But tech changes delayed the launch forcing Phillips to make the In2it-ive decision to keep the device from going to market. Reportedly, five were released for beta testing, and rumor has it there are only around 100 In2its floating around worldwide.
