Source text - Arabic تلعب وسائل الإعلام الحرة والمستقلة دورا لا يقدر بثمن في دعم الرخاء في كل بلد حول العالم. الصحافة الحرة هي مكون أساسي للمجتمع الشامل، في المساعدة على تمكين الناس من خلال ضمان اعلامهم، تشجيع النقاش العام حول القضايا الحرجة، محاسبة القادة, كما توفر الأمن الأساسي والمساءلة على اتخاذ القرار في جميع المستويات وبأن والقطاعات. كما أن الصحافة الحرة أيضا جزءا لا يتجزأ في الحفاظ على عقد اجتماعي صحي بين الحكومات والشعوب، فهي بمثابة المنتدى الذي يمكن من خلاله تبادل الحوار وبناء الثقة.

Translation - English A free and independent media plays an invaluable role underpinning prosperity in each and every nation around the world. A free press is a key component of an inclusive society, helping to empower people by ensuring they are informed, encouraging public debate on critical issues, holding leaders to account, and providing essential scrutiny and accountability of decision-making at all levels and in all sectors. A free press is also integral to maintaining a healthy social contract between governments and their people, acting as the forum through which dialogue can be exchanged and trust can be built.
However, our work highlights that across the world, media freedoms are increasingly coming under threat. Our global data shows that journalist safety from physical repression, press freedom from government censorship, political diversity of media perspectives, and freedom of opinion and expression, were all at lower levels in 2020 than they were in 2007.
In recent days, we have seen headlines of the serious threat facing media workers in Afghanistan. There has been an outpouring of anger and grief across the country following the news that three female media workers were gunned down in Jalalabad.
