Translation - English Why the English Promenade?
The ‘’Prom’’ for the Niçoise…. If you come to Nice it will be hard to miss it, for it is mystic, world-famous and cannot be overlooked… Hence why it is a candidate for becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Difficult to believe when looking at it today but this imposing promenade was nothing more than a modest earthy trail at the start of the 19th Century! From the middle of the 18th Century, Nice has been frequented as a winter destination for the wealthy English. However, the British complained about not having access to a promenade alongside the sea. Not a problem, as the first section was built so that the sea became a pleasant place to stroll. Today, it extends 7 kilometers from the airport to the port and allows one to discover the Nice coastline.
To the South, the indefinite Mediterranean Sea and its pebbled beaches. To the North, you will look in admiration before the most beautiful palaces and mystical hotels such as the Negresco, the Palace of the Mediterranean with its art deco façade… Golden Age and contemporary-style buildings, the casinos… Not to mention the palm trees which stretch all the way along.
There, one can stroll, bathe in the sea, practice different sports, admire the sunset while seated on the blue chairs, relax to the sound of rolling pebbles, sunbathe…, The ‘’Nissarts’’ make the most of it by jogging or going along by bike or roller-skates. Whether in good weather or overcast, it remains a most pleasant place to walk and the panorama over the Bay of Angels is ‘’magical’’.
