Nel 1956 Wilhelm Reich pubblica il suo ultimo articolo teorico: Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy. Con esso ritorna al concetto freudiano di pulsione di morte che negli anni Trenta non aveva accettato e il cui rifiuto lo rese uno scienziato inviso al movimento psicoanalitico.
Reich aveva scritto inizialmente il testo come contributo per una pubblicazione in vista del centenario della nascita di Freud. Non utilizzato, lo adatta per essere pubblicato sul numero 2 di Orgonomic Medicine, la rivista del collaboratore Elsworth Baker. In quegli anni Cinquanta egli non si considera più uno psicoanalista già da molto tempo, e proprio per questo egli ammette di sentirsi a disagio nel ritornare a scrivere dell’argomento psicoanalitico. In Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy Reich riassume la propria teoria energetica alla luce delle recenti ricerche svolte nel campo della meteorologia, e la pone in relazione con la freudiana pulsione di morte, un argomento che non esaminava dagli anni Trenta. Facendo ciò, ammette peraltro una parziale plausibilità del tardo pensiero freudiano che si manifesterebbe nell’esistenza di un’espressione energetica distruttiva.
In realtà Reich era già tornato sull’argomento nella lunga intervista concessa a Kurt Eissler dei Sigmund Freud Archives nel 1952 nell’ambito della raccolta di tutto il materiale freudiano disponibile, poi non pubblicata da questi ultimi ed edita nel libro Reich Speaks of Freud (1967). Qualche anno dopo, il nuovo articolo è l’occasione per parlare nuovamente delle proprie teorie e al contempo di onorare il maestro, pur precisando che questo ripensamento non va inteso come un’accettazione dell’esistenza della pulsione di morte. In Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy lo scienziato riconsidera la formulazione della pulsione di morte alla luce della sua teoria dell’energia vitale.
La pulsione di morte e il confronto con Freud
Nel 1920 Sigmund Freud pubblica Beyond the Pleasure Principle e riformula la propria precedente teoria pulsionale che prevedeva l’esistenza di spinte sessuali e di autoconservazione. La nuova descrizione dualistica individua invece come essenziali le pulsioni libidiche di vita (Lebenstrieb) e di morte (Todestrieb). Il principio di piacere viene rinominato come principio del Nirvana, secondo il quale l’apparato psichico cerca di mantenere costante, o quanto più basso possibile, l’ammontare di eccitamenti in esso presente (Freud, 1920).

In 1956 Wilhelm Reich published his last theoretical article: Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy. With it he reverted to Freud’s concept of death instinct, with which he had disagreed in the Thirties and whose rejection had made him unpopular among the scientists of the Psychoanalytic movement.
Reich had initially written the text as a contribution to a publication ahead of the centenary of Freud’s birth. Since it remained unused, he adapted it for publication in issue no. 2 of Orgonomic Medicine, the magazine published by his aide Elsworth Baker. As early as then, in the late Fifties, he no longer considered himself a psychoanalyst, and had not done so for a long time. No wonder he admitted feeling uncomfortable when he resumed writing about psychoanalysis. In Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy Reich summarized his own energy theory in view of recent research conducted in the field of meteorology, and connected it with Freud’s death instinct, a topic he had not scrutinized since the Thirties. In doing so, he did however agree that the late Freudian views, which would manifest themselves in the existence of a destructive form of energy, were partially conceivable.
As a matter of fact, Reich had already returned to the topic once in a long interview with Kurt Eissler of the Sigmund Freud Archives in 1952 while gathering all of the Freudian material available, even though that interview was not published by the latter but only printed later on in the book Reich Speaks of Freud (1967). A few years later, the new article gave him the opportunity to voice his theories again and simultaneously bring honour to his master, though stating clearly that such an afterthought was not to be construed as if he had agreed on the existence of the death instinct. In Re-emergence of Freud’s “Death Instinct” as “DOR” Energy the scientist reconsidered the definition of the death instinct in the light of his theory of life energy.
The death instinct and the comparison with Freud
In 1920 Sigmund Freud published Beyond the Pleasure Principle where he reformulated his former instinct theory that envisaged the existence of sexual as well as self-preservative impulses, replacing it with the new essential duality of the libido instincts of life (Lebenstrieb) and death (Todestrieb). The pleasure principle was renamed the Nirvana principle, a tendency of the psychic apparatus to keep constant or even minimize the amount of internal excitation (Freud, 1920).

Source text - Italian La Fiera aveva origini antichissime e già dal Mille era luogo di incontro
di mercanti che scendevano dai paesi oltralpe (Svizzera e Germania) o provenivano da Parma, Roma e Napoli.
Al posto della Fiera, l’architetto romano Marcello Piacentini,
vincitore di un concorso nazionale, progetterà quella serie di
edifici che dal 1920-30 caratterizzano il Centro di Bergamo.
Sono edifici autonomi, diversificati, ma omogenei, con giochi di
pietre mosse e di portici molto sciolti con ben studiati elementi
già presenti negli edifici precedenti. Della vecchia Fiera il Piacentini salverà la fontana settecentesca che stava al centro del reticolo di vie (la si trova ora in Piazza Dante) e quel viale lastricato, il Sentierone, che da parecchi decenni è il “passeggio” dei bergamaschi, ma che fin dal 1621 era destinato a parcheggio dei cavalli e dei carretti.
Ma, soprattutto, il Piacentini salverà la vista di Città Alta, come
del resto era vincolante al proposito il bando del concorso.
Translation - French La Foire est un événement aux origines très anciennes. Déjà en l’an Mille, elle était un point de rencontre des marchands descendant
des pays d’outre-Alpes (Suisse et Allemagne) ou venant de
Parme, Rome et Naples.
Les bâtiments du 18è siècle de la Foire, à l’aspect bas et sale, très
vite eux aussi disparaîtront. A leur place l’architecte romain Marcello
Piacentini, vainqueur d’un concours national, projeta l’ensemble des
édifices qui, dès les années 1920-30, caractérisent le Centre de Bergame.
Ce sont des bâtiments autonomes, différents mais homogènes,
avec des jeux de pierres et de portiques très libres avec des
éléments qui étaient déjà présents dans les édifices précédents.
Piacentini sauvera de la place de la Foire, la fontaine du XVIII siècle
située au centre de l’ancien réseau de rues (se trouvant maintenant
