I just read this on sci.lang.translation. I do not translate into French, so this never occured to me. Does anyone do this with French or other languages?:
"One French translator always included a calculation and an explanation of why the word count was incorrect because it
doesn't count the sequence l' (l, apostrophe) as a word"
ex. l'enfer = 2 words (le + enfer).

C'est l'enfer, n'est-ce pas ?
I analyzed this sentence in an RTF file giving the results below:
Word: 5 words
Trados: 8 words
Déjà Vu: 8 words
Another reason to use CAT tools
BTW, I don't think this is off topic.
