I signed up today as a guest at GeoWorkz.com, which offers different types of subscriptions (ranging from €10 to €50 a month, or €108 to €544 a year). You will then have access to its marketplace to view translation job offers. However, unless you're a paid member, you are not able to view the jobs and rates on offer. Contacting support fails, because the system does not allow me to login as a guest and submit a support ticket.

Does anyone here have any experience with the jobs and rates offered at GeoWorkz.com (a Lionbridge's company)? BTW, my language pair is EN-DU and DU-EN.

Thanks!

Where shall translators discuss this topic if not here? Jun 13, 2011

Recently heard about an incidentally vanished thread. And then, shortly ago, a colleague sent me a link. Same topic, maybe you want to take a look. http://tinyurl.com/69jaxpp (For all those who were not following that topic in the last 2 days.)

Marketplace Jun 14, 2011

The very idea of a translation marketplace is only good for translation company owners, not translators or even clients. I am not talking about Geoworkz, because I haven't used it, but from my experience elsewhere.

As a translator, you get random jobs, with very little or no reference material. It's impossible to learn the style and terminology for the future, because in the future you will work on something else. You have to decide quickly if you want the job, so you don't always make good decisions. In some cases, you don't even get to see the file beforehand, and you have to trust a general description.

Clients, on the other hand, get translations from random translators every time, with inconsistent style and terminology. They might pay less (although I don't know about that), but I can imagine that a lot of rework is required.

As much as I am in favour of paying to be a member of a portal in which we can discuss things openly, I find it hard to believe that I would pay a customer to be in their job portal.

Exactly, and I wish to stress the "openly" in that sentence, referring to the vanished thread linked above.

Marketplaces? Jun 14, 2011

Such private marketplaces can be seen as attempts to dehumanise translators and turn them into disposable objects that are nameless and faceless. They are marketplaces in the same way that street corners in the sleazier parts of many cities also serve as marketplaces.
