I am working on a technical translation from Dutch-English and some of the text is already translated as it was copied from another source. I received the material by fax and need to just retype this (already translated) text. It is text with subscripts and superscripts and tables and a drawing.
How much do you charge per word for retyping? Or do you charge by the page?
I would like a guideline on this. Thank you so much and Happy Easter.

I usualy charge by time. I use the normal price per hour for translating. Because, I type relativly fast, that never was a problem. But I always diskuss this matter before I start, sometimes happens, that end-customer has a original in electronic form (word or PDF-document).
If they are unhappy with this solution, just mark the positions of text, that should be copied/retyped and let them do it by themselfs.
Regards,
Aleksandar

If I'm familiar with the subject of the translation, I often translate only a little bit slower than I can actually type. So typing out text takes me almost as long as translating it. For that reason my rate for typing would be similar to my rate for translation... but no doubt the client won't be happy with that. So... charge your proofreading rate. After all, you'll need to proofread (not edit) the stuff you typed.
