Are there any rules about sending samples?

Are there any “industry standards”? Do you organize everything as a table (the original in the left column, the translation in the right column)? If sending a few samples, is it better to lump them all together in one file? What is a “standard” length of a sample?

But what I've seen at the University looks like what the ProZ portfolio shows in our profiles:
Two columns and a length between 200 and 300 words.
As we have this option I wouldn't send a file to the outsourcer unless I'm asked for, and in this case I would send all the samples in the same file with a nice presentation, pleasant to read.
