In the video, the speaker explains and demonstrates improvements made to the machine understanding of his English words, which are automatically transcribed as he speaks. He then demonstrates having those words translated directly into Mandarin – if it’s actually Cantonese I’ll punish myself – text.

Incredible how they can sell BS like this. You see things already go wrong in the recognition of his English speach; the computer is adding full stops at the wrong places, resulting in sentences without verbs or whatsoever. This of course ends up to be utter nonsense in Chinese. Everybody is clapping because they don't understand a word of Chinese... plus, this video is from two years ago, and since then the silence has been deafening.

I remember a Google wave demonstration where a chat was machine-translated live - the future of multilingual online communication was here!
Wave is gone again already, and if the translate function of Facebook is an indication, there is still work to do.
