How to calculate wordcount for text boxes? Thread poster: Natalya Zelikova
|
I have rather long document completely consisting of multiple text boxes. I am afraid I'll spent about 1-2 hours only to "copy-paste" them as text in a new Word file. Is there any way to count the words automatically?
I think Trados doesn't count them.

Hi! that sounds like a project I had lately. Multiple OLE objects embedded in word from visio, .ppt, excel sheets gave me a totally different word count and after cleaning the file only I could notice that the embedded objects were not processed at all. I did not take a word count anymore instead informed the OS and agreed on hourly rate. BR Brandis | | | Word count in Wordfast | Jul 18, 2008 |
If you use Wordfast, you can select "Textboxes" in the Tools section before analysing the document. Alternatively, you can use David Daduc's splendid Werecat tool (http://www.volny.cz/ddaduc/werecat.html) to extract boxed text into another Word document for translation. (After translation, the programme will send the translated text back into the document.) | |

No need to copy/paste texts included in textboxes.
You can use Anycount: http://www.anycount.com/
or Practicount: http://www.practiline.com/
to count everything (characters, lines, words, pages) in Word (including textboxes), as well as in Powerpoint, Excel, PDF or other formats. | | | Peter Linton (X) Local time: 01:43 Swedish to English + ... Convert to PDF | Jul 18, 2008 |
If you have software for converting (printing) a file into PDF format, that should show all the text, including all text in boxes. Then you can save the PDF file as text, and count the words in the text file.
Sounds complicated at first, but I have found this approach works well. | | | Natalya Zelikova Poland Local time: 02:43 English to Russian + ... TOPIC STARTER
Word-PDF-Word sounds easier, since I usually do this often, but couldn't think this could be my problem solution.
I also know about AnyCount, but again didn't know about it's ability to count text boxes.
Thank you all for advices. | | | All that should not be necessary | Jul 18, 2008 |

Yes it does, at least from version 7.1 onwards if you've got the "TRADOStag XML workflow for Word .doc files" box checked on the last page of the "Translation Memory Options" in Workbench.
I recommend you do the translation in TagEditor because this will make dealing with the text boxes easier. If you decide to go the traditional route and translate the file in Word, be sure to uncheck that option again before trying to perform a cleanup. Otherwise you will get an error message.

Benjamin

To Natalya: I have Anycount 6.x, but I was disappointed to discover that Anycount didn't count PDFs that are saved as images.
Anycount works fine with text boxes in Word. | | | Özden Arıkan Germany Local time: 02:43 English to Turkish + ... | CompleteWordCount | Jul 18, 2008 |
Works well, but counts words only, no characters. | | | NGK United States Local time: 19:43 WordCountAll (free tool) | Jul 19, 2008 |
This macro counts all the words, characters, and double-byte characters in a Microsoft Word document, including the words in text boxes. It can also do batch word counts for multiple documents.

The problem was solved, so I can not check all the other options now, but will remember them for future.

I should try this too.
