Hi! I am searching for a tool, using which one could compare 2 files of same content and nature, to find how far they are similar. Does anyone know a tool like this, and can give me a tip.
Thank you in advance.

It also compares Word and Heml files. I have been using it since two years now with great satisfaction:

This is something new for me. What is the purpose of comparing two files? I visited the site referred to. I am yet to grasp the idea behind the product. For example, I read:
Personal licence: 29$ / 24€
2-9 seats: 24$ / 19€
10-19 seats: 19$ / 16€ Buy now!
20-49 seats: 13$ / 10€
50-99 seats: 11$ / 9€
What is one talking about? Thanks in advance for any clarifications.

Hi Brandis,
If you have the two files in .doc format, you might simply try the 'compare and merge documents' function in MS Word. You will find it under tools.

Hi Narasimhan,
let's say you have translated a file A and now you have to translate a file B, an updated version of file A. If you have a tool for comparing files (for example DeltaView or DiffDoc), you'll know in few seconds where the differences are, what has been deleted, substituted and/or added to the previous file. These tools produce a detailed report of these changes and you can quickly calculate how much time you'll need to do the job and your rate as well.

Outsourcers rarely highlight differences in the text, therefore you'd have to go through the whole text, word by word, in order to find the differences. Of course, if you had translated file A with a CAT and you have a translation memory, you'd see the differences more quickly.

Narasimhan,
File compare utilities are useful not just for translators, but also for programmers, HTML coders, etc. They can compare two versions of a source code, for example, and find out what are the differences between them. The utility will display the files side by side, highlight the differences, allow jumping to next difference, etc.

By the way, I use the file comparison function in Total Commander. It's not the best, but it's enough for my purposes. ▲ Collapse | | | Compare function in Word | Jun 29, 2004 |
If you're using it for files that can be opened in Word, you can use it's own "compare" function (Tools - Track Changes - Compare)
Plus Tools (free software at www.wordfast.net) can also compare several types of files efficiently.

Hi! the idea behind this is self-protection. Sometime back I had posted at the proz-forums, that I was facing trouble with an outsourcer ( who was heavily mouthing and by nature abusive)who had recd. unfinalized, but fully converted site into german language on his own request and upon receiving the unfinalized work went to other translators and got it done, arguing that my work was totally useless ( is there is also a totally useless translation, for the fact that the files are not finalized). Now I had demanded the final version, after awating for while, expecting him to send me the final version, as a matter of proof my "totally useless work". He had argued, that the project is finished and and the matter is closed, and lead my attention to the site, which is being projected, saying that I should see for myself and judge, since there was no P.O and no time-frame, I feel my stolen. Since I cannot compare my local file with a remote site without having access to the site. I needed further tools to extract the site content, which lead to another necessity to compare the extracted content with my local files. It was impossible to compare a fast site with my local files, hence my request to have a tool to automatize and analyse this aspect. That is the story. I haven´t downloaded these tools yet, shall but do so very soon.

Brandis
