Hello,

Could somebody help out?

I just finished doing a script translation. The original english files came in an excel looking program whose extension is .CSV. Upon receipt, it opened in excel and so I proceeded to do the translation in French in the French column. I saved it many times closed and re- opened it to work on it. i did the proof reading and then I zipped all of the work to send it back to the client. Hello,

When they opened it, all of the characters which had accents(é,ç,à ) turned into symbols. I went nuts .... my files now all have them as well.

Is there a way to revert them , save them exchange or salvage them without me having to redo and start from scratch? What happened? How can I prevent it?

Is is an excel vs this csv thing?
Is it from my computer? Should I save it under something else?

I don't know if I reached the right forum but your assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks -

It's quite possible that each symbol was replaced by one other symbol. You should, therefore, be able to replace the new symbols with French symbols using simple search and replace.

What you can do, is to open the translated CSV file in a Unicode text editor afterwards, to check everything, and then save as Unicode (unless the client requests Latin-1 or suchlike). I use SimRedo as Unicode editor for Windows (requires Java).

Thank you. I will try your suggestion.

What you were given was a comma separated file Mar 3, 2005

A format that is best used for numerical data files and that is why your characters were not recognised. Samuel's suggestion is the correct way to proceed.

Another option could be to change the formatting of the cells in Excel to 'text' and see if that helps.

Good luck!
Myriam
