Just to be clear, the rate in the cited article is 0.14 EUR (ca. 0.19 USD) and not 0.14 USD, and I still don't think that this changes anything.

The big every-language-every-field agencies have to compete more or less strictly on the basis of price and visibility: The agency here is making some attempt to establish a USP and an ability to compete on the basis of quality and believability.

If this company considers it necessary to start out at 0.14 EUR per word to get into the market, that is their business decision. I think that they are shooting themselves in the foot, because they will underprice themselves out of the market they want/need to enter and I do not think that they will be able to consistently find quality specialized translators to work for them at 0.07 EUR/ word, nor do I think that 2 or 3 EUR cents per word left over for reinvestment and profit are enough to make things work on the agency's end.

I accept that things may be different in other parts of Europe and with other language combinations, but I would have a problem with someone suggesting that 0.14 EUR is a reasonable end-client rate for a translation by a competent translator from and into any language - and here the authors here are defending this rate as though it were unusuallly high.

€ 0.14 is a decent rate Mar 6, 2014

for a translator alone. For an agency it is not enough. These agencies count that the translator will charge only 0.10, which is not sustainable at the medium term.

Someone told me a while ago that these medium-range rates are the most difficult ones, because it is too much for clients who want cheap work and not enough for those who want quality, so the translator or the agency is likely to receive neither.
