Hi Alice,
I don't use Norton, but experienced a similar, if not worse problem, with my antivirus program. What seemed to cause it was the fact that I ran programs while it was doing a daily virus check/weekly virus check, also at times when it wasn't convenient for me I would just end the virus check. Once I went and set up the antivirus daily/weekly scan to run at certain times and let it run it's course, my problem disappeared. It reappeared again when I ignored this again and sto... What seemed to cause it was the fact that I ran programs while it was doing a daily virus check/weekly virus check, also at times when it wasn't convenient for me I would just end the virus check. Once I went and set up the antivirus daily/weekly scan to run at certain times and let it run it's course, my problem disappeared. It reappeared again when I ignored this again and stopped a scan. You may have to stop what you're doing and set up your scans and then let it run a quick scan first, and maybe also restart your computer, but I can assure you that this definitely fixed my problem, and mine was severe with documents getting hung up and it taking forever to open docs, word not responding, etc.

Check your pagefile settings. It is best to allow Windows to manage the page file rather than use customized settings.
Try saving again after shutting down all other processes, when page file requirements go down considerably. Under Windows Task Manager->Performance, check the Page File Usage History. Page File usage should not too high.

Yes, I'd run into that problem before too, but now I've scheduled my weekly virus scan to run late every Friday night, so I don't think that is it.

Where do I find my pagefile settings?
I've closed all other programs and tried saving a Word file with a directory change while looking at the little graph in the task manager (system performance or whatever it's called in English), but the graph stays flat at about 2% while my Word takes minutes (literally) to change folders.

If this still doesn't fix it, and if you are feeling adventurous, you can try setting the page file yourself. Here's how:
On systems with 512 MB or more of physical memory, the large initial size of the page file can consume excessive amounts of disk space. On a system with 1 GB of RAM, for instance, the starting page file size is 1.5 GB, and under normal circumstances it’s likely that this file will never be used. The best strategy for page-file management in this configuration is to set Initial Size to be relatively small-say, 512 MB-while setting a large maximum size so that Windows can increase the page file size if necessary. This setting keeps disk space use in check but prevents the possibility of experiencing out-of-memory errors. If disk space is really tight, set the initial page-file size to its minimum of 2 MB and set the maximum size to a value that is at least as large as the amount of installed memory. Use your computer normally for a few weeks and allow Windows to create a page file of the proper size. Use Task Manager to monitor the size of the page file and make certain that it’s below the maximum size you specified.

I've changed pagefile to system specificed as you suggested, but moving between folders before saving a file is still PAINFULLY slow. It's taking me 10 minutes for each file to move up and down the folders to save files in the proper place.
This is not just the case in WOrd, but also, for example, when I want to attach a file to an e-mail.

It's taken me a while to get back to this thread - thank you all for your help. I ended up taking my PC in to the local computer store, and the specialist there had a look at it, shook his head and told me that my PC was corrupt. He took EVERYTHING off my computer, backed up all my files, and reinstalled the lot. Now it works just fine But he told me that if I hadn't acted as I did, I might have lost all my files.

I've invested in a file server, so all of my files are stored on the server, not my computer. That also makes it easier for me to share files with my husband (we work as a team). Now I back up my data every night onto a tape, so even if my server dies I always have my data backed up.
