I don't know if this is a new idea or if it has been running around for a while, I haven't been in ProZ for so long, but I'd like to share it with you and get some ideas...
Carlos Moreno encouraged me today with his posting to think about some improvements to ProZ. And I immediately came upon one I find feasible (though it might take some site building actually...) and very useful: a section for dictionaries and resources.

If you have been around for a while you will already know how often we find in the fora requests of "a good dictionary from XXX to YYY, in the fielz of ZZZ". I myself once asked a similar question when my girlfriend started studying German, and I received a few very very useful answers from the experts.
Now, instead of making this an occasional thing, a "questions & answers" structure that's very hard to search and use (unless you make a fresh question again of course with the experts patiently answering again the same thing), I was thinking ProZ could eventually include a "resources" section where everybody could insert new resources, classify them, rate them, insert comments (this is my favourite dictionary, this IT glossary is incomplete, is very old,...), etc. My view is very general, very preliminary, but I envision it as a middle point between a "blue board" of dictionaries, glossaries and online resources and a section similar to the "CAT fight section" - though much more complex and rich.
Well I realize this is a long term proposal involving quite a lot of programming should it finally be adopted. Though, I think there is a huge knowledge base about this subject (more than 60000 professionals and lots of experiences with dictionaries, glossaries and resources... this is our job after all!). We only need to gather this knowledge, structure it, make it available to professionals of the site... I think it could be in line with the purpose and spirit of the site and would become yet another valuable section for sharing experiences and advice.
As I told you, I am not positive about this being a new proposal, I think there might even already exist something like this in the site! But I thought it was a good idea to share. I look forward to your comments.

We do already have Glosspost, but we don't have something to assess dictionaries, i.e. something like the blue board where you can give so many points to a dictionary and comment on it too. Personally, I would find this very useful, as I'm more likely to order a dictionary on the Internet or over the phone than be able to get to specialist bookshops. It has been suggested before, but I don't know whether it's in the pipeline...

Nikki (lovely picture!), I know you mean print, but I want to point out that the form to file URLs to GlossPost is very useful, since it gives people the possibility to comment on each resource and give others an idea of how complete or useful they may be. It's hard to find the time for a good assessment or a comment, and actually this is one of the reasons I don't post stuff (I hate to post what I feel is incomplete information), but the effort is worthwhile. I have a little form I use (er... used to use) when posting glossaries to the Yahoo list:

I keep this in my draft folder. About actually using it... what was it about a road paved with good intentions? But maybe it can help others...

yes, I mean books, those things that can cost quite a lot of money. I've just seen about ten possible interesting dictionaries (on the Internet), but I can't buy them all. Oh to be able to post them to a dictionary board and get comments on them with points so I could decide which ones to buy. Just knowing a resource exists on the Internet (i.e. GlossPost) is fine, 'cause if it's no good, it hasn't cost you anything. I really do think there should be a specific place for dictionary rating on this site, rather than individual postings (as there sometimes are) in the forums.

Count me in, so there's two of us. About GlossPost not covering Ruben's suggestion, I agree. There's a proposal (by Gianfranco Manca) to revamp the forum section of this site. When the ProZ team gets to it, I think dictionaries should probably go to some subsection of Translators' Resources. And I'm not sure where it stands in the pipeline, but I will try and buzz a bit about it from time to time. Mod's honor

I still don't think the classification of paper dictionaries should be left to a sub-section of the forums while glossary URL get a whole section, but well, it's nice to hear the subject's on the air.
Apart from that, I agree with Nikki in what she says about dictionaries and their cost and how good it would be to get a structured feedback from other proz before you put the money on them.

You are no longer a minority of one, Nikki:-)
I think your suggestion is great and that it would be very useful to be able to grade paper and CD ROM dictionaries in some structured way on Proz.
So, if we are voting here - please count my vote too:-)
