Thanks for the suggestion May 13, 2010

Hello claudiabi,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have added this to our backlog of ideas and suggestions for site improvement, to be evaluated for possible future implementation.

Please note that it is unlikely that a category would be added based upon a single request, but requests for additional categories, coupled with ongoing review of site usage patterns, will determine future changes to the category structure.

Using the term "allopatic medicine" really rubs me the wrong way... it's a misleading term coined by Hahnemann that is never used by people who practise the sort of medicine it is supposed to refer to.
If you want to differentiate what most doctors do from alternative medicine, call it "scientific medicine".

subject: a broader spectrum of medical fields May 13, 2010

FarkasAndras,

I think that this is not a post to raise some polemic debates, this is a post in which I just expose my concerns about having a field named "Alternative Medicine" or something equivalent.

Anyway, the subject of this post is about the possibility of having a more precise profile field regarding the medical disciplines that are not normally recognized as such, though some of them date back to thousands of years (for ex. acupuncture).

Please I am not looking for discussions about traditional vs alternative medicine.
I feel I do not deserve your irritation.
thanks

If you use "Eastern medicine" and "alternative medicine" interchangeably (I wouldn't, especially not if I considered myself an expert of the field), then no, alternative medicine in general is clearly not scientific at all. Those practices that stood the test of evidence got adopted by scientific medicine (e.g. many medicinal plants whose effects were proven). The practices that remained as separate from, or alternative to, scientific medicine, are definitely not scientific and usually aren't claimed to be.

great idea! May 13, 2010

I fully agree that having a field "Alternative medicine" or "Holistic medicine" would be good.

Thanks for this!

good idea May 13, 2010

I think it's a good idea. Perhaps, if it is supported by enough users, there could be two sub-categories under "Health";
"Traditional Medicine" - "Alternative Medicine"
(I personally believe them both to be scientific but that's besides the point. : )

I agree May 14, 2010

I, too, feel that this would be a useful distinction. I hope a change to the system will be forthcoming.

I don't quite agree May 14, 2010

Shouldn't we consider "alternative medicine", "holistic medicine", "integrated medicine" as serious medical concepts? In that case, I think it is best to keep them under the umbrella of medicine.

To me, a special distinction of these approaches to health and healthcare will make them appear as a less serious thing or the preference of a passionate minority, instead of a serious mainstream option.

The only reason to make a distinction in Proz.com would be that the goal of this proposal is to create a niche market for translators and their customers. Is this what is intended?

Just my opinion!

Tòmas,

I understand your point of view, but if you are talking about my idea of creating a niche, it is not new, I mean, on Proz there are already some, such as Dentistry, Cardiology, etc. I am talking obviously just about profile fields. I feel that I would be inaccurate if I wrote Medicine general, because it is not true. I think that alternative medicine has become a big branch... anyway, I can put still "medical general" on my profile or nothing and it's okay for me.

As for creating something to have clients, in my opinion Proz.com is about giving opportunities to translators to exchange help and to be known and contacted for jobs.

thanks for your opinion

Agree with Claudia's suggestion ... May 14, 2010

I fail to see why this distinction should not be made in order to make it easier for clients to find a translator who might suit their requirements.

Medicine is a very broad field and I am not sure if somebody specialising in dentistry, for example, would necessary feel comfortable with a translation on homeopathy or TCM.

Speaking as someone who would be very reluctant to accept a translation in the field of alternative medicine (but who is comfortable with several areas of conventional medicine), I agree that it is useful to separate these fields.

Without going into whether anyone believes in either system or both, it is also a matter of knowing the terminology and understanding the principles well enough to be able to take on a translation.
