It was time someone took the initiative. I'm glad you did "PC"!
All my best wishes for the forum. I hope to get a great deal of information/help/encouragement here.

Thanks for bringing forth this idea. I have emailed my peers directly if I had any questions about Hindi in the past (not just the language, but also the tools), and it sure would be nice to have a forum dedicated to the language where we could get input from other experts. I think it is a great idea, and I hope Proz staff notices the need.
Thanks! | | | Arun Singh Local time: 11:50 English to Hindi + ... The most important and needed step! | Aug 31, 2004 |
First of all congratulations for such a good effort. I strongly feel that whenever we 'connect Hindi with computers' the question of compatibility of font and it's display seems very important. For this Hindi is in 'Shaishawa awastha' learning to walk through the network of computers! Every commercial application comes with its own keyboard layout to work with. So it is very important to have some proper and solid solutions or thumb rules. I feel that through this people we could have good base... Actually, this is Hindi Unicode font. One of my friends has given me a tip for reading such text. It is quite simple - Go to View on your Internet Explorer browser and then move on to Encoding and finally select Unicode(UTF-8) and you will be able to read the text typed in Hindi Unicode.

Very glad to learn about the Hindi forum. If Latin fonts are acceptable, I would be able to express my ideas. If it is not too much trouble, could you please send the fonts to me so that I can read what you are writing?

taking pains to help us out in reading this text. In fact, this message is written in Hindi Unicode which is visible in Windows 2000 or XP version. I was successful in viewing it even on Windows 98 after selecting unicode (View>Encoding>Unicode) because I already had unicode font installed in my system.
Thanks again for your kind help and keen interest in our language.

I believe that you might have gone through the messages posted by my colleagues hereinabove who are strongly advocating the need for introducing the Hindi forum. It appears to be the need of the hour to start the same because we people frequently feel the requirement of a platform where we can discuss and solve our problems relating to Hindi translation, technical difficulties, software problems and business issues etc which specifically belong to Hindi translators.
You have asked what will happen to Gujarati and whether we can read the trilingual text posted by you. In this connection, I would like to inform you that the matter written by you in Gujarati Unicode is clearly visible on my windows xp enabled machine. If you think that there should be a Gujarati forum as well, you may take initiative for the same and we'd be very pleased if your request is acceded to by the concerned people because we want to see our languages flourish by leaps and bounds. Afterall, Gujarati is a sister of Hindi!
In view of the position explained above, I'd appreciate if you could make recommendations for introducing the Hindi forum as early as possible in the capacity of a Moderator, the need for which is desperately being felt by all of us.
Regards

Of course,
I cannot read it, but, as far as I can judge, UTF-8 shows fonts correctly.

Unfortunately, although I understand Hindi, I don't translate from/to Hindi, hence don't have a Hindi keyboard or software...I guess that means I won't be able to read posts! Pity. Can anyone suggest a website where I can download Hindi fonts for Macintosh OSX?
Good luck with the forum: look forward to tracking serious, professional Hindi-English-Hindi discussions. Hope I'll be able to offer the occasional answer!
Thank for introducing desirable.. And it would be good to see more information concerned with Hindi history..
To Kaveri: To get Hindi keyboard it is quite simple, just go to http://www.latkey.com/keyboard_stickers.asp?SubCat=25 and regarding the rest - you can ask their assistance or search http://www.google.com/ for downloads. | |
