This is a somewhat contentious matter which Henry 'Proz.com' Dotterer raised at the Proz.com conference in Oxford. I was wondering what the state of play was at the moment...

Also, I would like to take this opportunity to stress one aspect that I believe wasn't properly discussed at the conference: the possibility of opting out of such Translators' Blue Board.

Maybe Henry is 'listening' and can shed some light on the matter......

Any reports from Oxford? Jan 10, 2005

Oh, how I wish I could have attended... but why cry over spilled milk - I'll just try to plan for the next one

Meanwhile, I would love to read a report or something like that one what was discussed in Oxford; Giovanni, could you elaborate on this, please?

Thanks!

Nancy

Translators' Blue Board - maybe dispensable? Jan 10, 2005

Nobody has any doubts that there are some black sheep in every group.

But you can ask a translator to send his work after each day - at least in the beginning - additionally to a short test translation for which you can ask before you will send a P.O.

Now how about asking a client to send his money after each day - at least in the beginning - plus a short test payment in advance?

This question is not meant as a serious proposal, of course.

I just wanted to point out some differences in the risks and needs of outsourcers and translators.

Cheers,
Harry

No timeline yet, sorry, but I can say that in nothing would be imposed on anyone.

At the conference I mentioned that we intend to offer translators a means of differentiating themselves on the basis of their successful track records. Of course, no one would be forced to use any such tool.

We would start there. This would help to meet *some* of the need that *some* of clients have for a better means of differentiating translators.

Where we would go from there is not clear. That a track record tool for translators would lead to a "translator blue board" is speculative. Let's see how it goes.

Star system Jan 10, 2005

How about the stars in our profile?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think outsourcers have the option of giving us a golden star if we do a good job. Yet, the system is seldom used as far as I know, and outsourcers may not even be aware of it. How about mentioning it in the BlueBoard, or when we enter a rating and they receive a report?

A golden star in a profile would probably have more impact than their feedback in the BlueBoard, as potential clients are probably reading our profiles.

Translators themselves would probably feel more comfortable with such a system than with a payment list or blueboard format.

Just a few thoughts.

Excellent! Jan 11, 2005

I think Sarah's suggestion is excellent! Rather than creating a new system of credit perhaps simply enhancing a system already in place would serve the purpose. Of course I believe many agencies/clients as well as translators would love to see a system whereby a translator gets some recognition of his/her good work. And if this system is made optional, as Henry has suggested, no one should have any complaints.

The profiles of translators including the CVs are what we have to say about ourselves. Why not let others say a few things about us?

thanks... Jan 12, 2005

to Henry for the update and to everybody else for taking part in the post. I'm glad to hear that, should such a Blue Board be implemented, there will be the possibility of opting out.

Regards,

Giovanni
