As a longtime site member, I have earned too many browniz points, most of which come from giving "agree", "neutral" or "disagree" comments to other peers' kudoZ answers. Since our main purpose to participate in the kudoZ activities is to help each other, gaining browniz is really the least important thing. Thus, I'd like to ask a question here: Can we choose between "for browniz" and "not for browniz" when giving a comment in the kudoZ section? Agree or disagree, folks? | | | Erik Freitag Germany Local time: 15:25 Member (2006) Dutch to German + ... What's the problem with having too many BrowniZ? | Nov 6, 2006 |
While I would not object to give the user a choice whether he wants to collect those BrowniZ or not, I would like to know what advantage you see in not getting them. Do you consider your having a high number of BrowniZ a disadvantage? How so?
Kind regards,

If the burden gets too heavy to carry, you can always donate your points to someone else.

You can use 4000 pts. to pay your annual membership here, and thus save about 25 USD. | | |
I believe you can already donate them to non-Platinum members, actually - see para 6. at http://www.proz.com/faq/browniz#bz_donate. That's on condition they become Platinum members, though (or whatever we're called nowadays!)

In any case, like Thomas and Erik, I fail to see why accumulating "too many" is a problem. While I agree that the acquisition of BrowniZ is not an end in itself, in my case I can say that I do not make peer comments in order to earn BrowniZ, so for me personally there's no suggestion that they *are* the most important thing. Also, if we have to choose whether we want them or not every time we want to make a comment, that's just going to slow the process down - not by much, probably, but all these little things add up (I'm very much in favour of keeping screen clutter to a minimum).
Ultimately, even if you're not going to use them for anything, they're just a number on your screen - you can always ignore them.

Erik, I don't see anything wrong with accumulating many browniz points. I would just like to make a personal choice to get no more browniz from now on... Thanks for your straightforwardness.

Yes, Thomas and Peter-- just like a few other colleagues working in my language pair(S), I have posted related topics in the Chinese forum several times, showing our/my strong willingness to donate our browniz. But so far, only one colleague has accepted this offer. We are not quite sure why so few people are interested in this "membership discount", which sounds really good…

I did that before, but it seems to be less charming than the directory itself...;), so I'd rather not bother to spend time on it. Thanks, anyway.

Thanks for reminding me, Mihail. In fact, I used them to pay the membership fee a couple of times, but they are simply far more than needed...

Quite right, Peter. But they really are a distracting number on the screen. Turns out I have about 700. I have not the slightest idea what to do with them. I will willingly give all of them to the first person who can reply with the first word from the best novel written in my lifetime – which is, of course, ‘La Guerra del Fin del Mundo’ by Mario Vargas Llosa. | | | Agreeing for BrowniZ | Nov 7, 2006 |
The problem I see in getting BrowniZ from agreeing or disagreeing is that there are actually some people that apparently "agree" just to get them.
I have noticed in my language pair that almost every time I provide an answer that takes me pretty long to come up with, and I am not even a hundred percent confident myself with it, I start getting these "agrees" immediately always from the same people. They would agree to anything.

Guess you will need to wait until it amounts to 4000 before you are able to donate them to a non-member. If you are thinking of going platinum, you can surely use them first.
kind regards,
Betty

Very true! That's the trouble we all encounter from time to time. As for the people mentioned by you, we might need another button added (in addition to the one I mentioned in the KudoZ Forum for "kudoZ donation") to let the kudoZ or BrowniZ moderator decide whether their "agree"s, which are given too often, deserve the browniz points or not. Most importantly, we should never take it for granted that the answer with the most "agree"s is always the best in spite of the fact that it's the most favored answer that always gets the four kudoZ points. As we know, people ask kudoZ questions because they don't have their own answers. Therefore, their choice of "the most helpful answer" largely depends on other peers' comments. No wonder there's a general trend that the real pros begin to worry about the quality of the KOG (Kudoz Open Glossary): If unprofessional answerers with not-so-good answers get points too often (based on their large number of "agree"s), how can the askers (most of them are not language pros either) "clean up" the KOG correctly? Do we need a well-trained KOG editor/ lexicographer/moderator in each language pair to ensure the quality of the KOG entries?
Kind regards,
Betty

Of course, it is not meant for answering or agreeing, but it is a simple way of answering, which enables a good discussion between asker and answerers, and you'll get no points. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Can we agree or disagree without getting browniz?
