yes... Nov 12, 2007

Well, yeah, the idea itself is great. It is even listed as one of the benefits you get while becoming a student member. But is it really doable? I mean, would there be any expercienced translator wishing to participate in this and actually give a part of their work to a student?

Hopefully.

Let's make a team to create the mentorship programme Nov 13, 2007

Hi Katya and Karol!

It's great to hear you are asking for this.

We have started outlining a mentors/apprenticeship program in the site and had started by creating the posting space for members only at the exchange area.

We would like to create a program to connect experienced translators with novice translators, so that you both establish a mutually beneficial relationship, achieving your goals and fulfilling each others' professional needs.

Hi Katya and Karol!

So, it's great to see that you are actually interested in this and I would like to hear what you, as students, would need and expect to have in a mentoring program at the site.

For example, how do think would be the best way to implement this? What kind of commitment would you expect from your mentors? What would you, as apprentice students, be willing to do? How would you like to get paired with your mentors? What kind of work relationship do you think would the most beneficial for you? What kind of feedback would you ideally like to receive from your mentors? Would you be only interested in getting actual translation experience or would you also be interested in having "guru mentors" that would guide you into the translation industry?
Well, there are many issues to go over and you will come up with more surely. But basically, it would be great to know how you see this issue and what we should best do so that we make a difference at improving your lives as students and future translators?

We are ready to work for you. To create tools and opportunities for you. So, I propose to create a "mentorship program team" and share ideas and work on this project in this thread.
All students that are interested in making this happen are welcome to post their minds on this issue here.

So, speak out. Tell us what you want. We'll do our best to make it happen.

I'm all ears guys!

S.

Needs and Expectations in the mentoring programm Nov 29, 2007

Hi again!

I would like you to participate in this topic because it would be an open door to star working, meeting professional translators, working with experienced people who is going to give us the orientation to get introduced into the translation's world, and even a nice relationship with your work partner!

Hi again!

I would like you to participate in this topic because it would be an open door to star working, meeting professional translators, working with experienced people who is going to give us the orientation to get introduced into the translation's world, and even a nice relationship with your work partner!

About Sole's questions:

- What would be the best way to implement the mentoring programm?

I think first of all that we need some advertising to let professional translators know us and what we demand. We are a part of the Proz network, true?
Secondly it would be nice to offer translators some advantages to take part in this program (kudoz points, 1month free membership or something like that...)jejej...(I know, I am very imaginative, uh...)

- Commitment from mentors:

Basically to give us the opportunity of becoming their assistant.
Get a little bit of the easiest work they have (where we could help them...in order to release their burden of work...) or translation works they have already done and headed in to let us have a pattern to work with and take some tips from. The sources they had used and other materials needed could be also a must...???
This can be monthly, a couple of times a week, etc.

- We as students, are really willing to do our best with this new opportunity and commit ourselves to work hard and be serious with deadlines...

- How to get paired with mentors:
This can be asked to the students. In my case I would like to specialize in Medicine and Pharma, so would be nice to have a mentor who is a specialist in this field... and of course the pair of languages we are interested in.

- The relationship between student-mentor has to be the most friendly it can be to create a nice work atmosphere, where the master teaches its knowledge to the young disciple/apprentice ...

At the moment, these are my points. I will be happy to hear from others ideas'....!!!!!!

So com'onnnnnn!!!express yourself about it

Beijinhos,

Carmen.

It seems a good idea, I'm also interested in taking part in this initiative Dec 11, 2007

Hi Kaltya, first of all it's nice to meet somene from my own university here at proz forum, I think we are the only students from uva to be members at the moment. On the other hand I find it essential to have the possibility to have any mentorship for students or beginnners as I've been looking for internships or apprenticeships connected to translation and there are not really many to apply for. Your ideas are briliant. Please keep me informed about any move you are doing, I'm willing to part... See more

Thank you very much for your answer Juan! I am also very happy to hear about you I will keep you upgraded as soon as I get some news!

I am still waiting for any kind of "movement" from the rest of the students. We should make more emphasis in this matter! I don't know what's going on. It seems as no one has interest or does not believe we could achieve our target???

A new pairing Dec 11, 2007

Hi GuyZ,

Well, in the meantime we got a new student-mentor pairing: a translator from Germany and a student from Australia. They have met at the site and arranged for six months of mentoring that will be starting next January.

Hi GuyZ,

Well, in the meantime we got a new student-mentor pairing: a translator from Germany and a student from Australia. They have met at the site and arranged for six months of mentoring that will be starting next January.

The responsibilities of the mentor will be:

[ ] If possible, provide commercial work to the apprentice in a volume and at a rate to be agreed upon mutually, taking full responsibility for timely payment to the apprentice.
[ ] Check every word of the apprentice's work, editing as necessary, and providing an explanation of the edits to the apprentice.
[ ] Advise and assist the apprentice as necessary in the use of required tools, marketing, site usage, etc.
[ ] Report on the apprentice's performance at the close of the defined mentoring period.

And the student's responsibilities as an apprentice will be:

[ ] Complete agreed upon work on time and to a high standard of quality.
[ ] Familiarize self with required tools.
[ ] Register the relationship at the start of the defined mentoring period, and then report on your experience with the mentor at the end. (Your successful completion of the mentoring program is something you can optionally show in your profile at the close.)

As a compensation:

[ ] All participants will receive a statement in their profile indicating the mentor/apprentice completed the mentoring program
[ ] There will be a designated page for all mentors/apprentices with a brief bio-section
[ ] Mentors will receive two months of membership, once they've completed the defined mentoring period

As it has been done in other mentoring cases, the site will create a private forum for them to communicate and work, their "back office".

So, this will be a new mentors-apprenticeship formed at the site for next year. This student will be working with a professional translator, getting first hand experience, learning about the indutry and getting a valuable insight into the use of CAT tools. Plus he will be getting actual translation jobs, receive feedback on his translations from a professional, get valuable references and start creating job for himself.

The way this has been happening in the site, officially or not, is through active partipation in the site, that is, if you take the chances to show yourself and network through the many channels that the site gives you, great opportunities will come for you. I know for sure that many students, and of course also translators, can give a testimonial for that.

I am also quite suprised Kaltya that no many students have a thing to say about this, but well I can see the spirit growing and envision better opportunities for this matches in the coming months.

You know, opportunities, like this one for this student, some say that "just come". That may be so, but I like to think that one always does something as insignificant as it might seem for it to come.

If you can read this wisely, you will know what I mean.

CheerZ!

Sole.
