Mats the derogatory use of the word faggot has come into the UK owing to US influence, I imagine. Typically though it is not as a faggot is a kind of meatball, and the shortened word fag is slang for cigarette

It's kind of funny... In some languages, there are terms for the word homosexual that come from the flora. Fikus, fruit (well it actually started off as fruitcake), finocchio (fennel in Italian). It's probably just a coincidence, but it's still kind of funny.

neutral SafeTex : Unfortunately, this word is also used in slang in a second way which could be ambiguous here. See 'as nutty as a fruitcake' on Google. For me 'a fruitcake' is nutty as in stupid rather than homo
