The point was to do it 2-3 times on the same video, without any committed deadline.

When there is a deadline as usual, there is no time for trial-and-error. We must hit it right the first time.

Talking about deadlines, last week a client called me... We have a 2-hour video, which we need translated PT-EN, subtitled, and authored on a DVD for tomorrow. My response was rather blunt: Not even in Hollywood! Two weeks was my answer, though most likely I'd have it done in 10 days.

No but Apr 30, 2011

sometimes I like to select the subtitles option in my source language if it is available on a DVD of a movie that is in my target language, just to see how they translate things, i.e. watch an English movie with French subtitles.

Once... Apr 30, 2011

... I transcribed a short animated film. It was at college and I really enjoyed doing it.

Am usually to busy working to even think about engaging in work-related activities in my "spare" time.

I do often enjoy shouting abuse at bad subtitling on TV though, and wonder why they don't just employ a native speaker who actually understands what is being said in the approriate registers...

before actually starting translating, I did it for fun. I never had a paid subtitling job, but I transcribed few times. It is fun, but very difficult. I would like to subtitle and transcribe more.

I do enjoy it for some enjoyment but also for staying 'in practice', and I do find that seeing other people's work can be just as a learning tool. I don't meet too may people with same linguistic appreciation, so it's always good to keep my eyes open.

For my own ProZ profile Oct 4, 2011

I made a promo video on my ProZ profile, and put subtitles in English for the non-English parts. Take a look and let me know what you think...
