Hi everyone!

About a month ago, I made a quick video called, ‘How to dictate in multiple languages using Talon (Dragon replacement)’, which I posted on LinkedIn and on my new blog (https://beijer.uk/blog/how-to-dictate-in-multiple-languages-using-talon-voice ). Today, I’m back with another cool app I just discovered, which can essentially do the same thing, but which is much easier to install and use. This is great news for those among us who are less technically minded and just want it to work, without having to mess around with code, etc.

For example, on Windows, it’s literally just a case of running a Windows installer, running it, and pressing a shortcut to trigger it. It’s that easy.

Also, it runs on MacOS, Windows or as a Chrome extension!

It’s called ‘Whispering’, and is available on GitHub at https://github.com/braden-w/whispering
You can also test it online @ https://whispering.bradenwong.com/

Here’s a quick screencast of me dictating in English and Dutch. I haven’t tested it extensively with other languages, but I managed to get very good results in German and Spanish as well (!!!), and I’m sure it will work with many other languages!

Whisper API? Jun 22

Do you know if it uses an API for OpenAI's Whisper? I've dictated into the ChatGPT app on my mobile phone quite a bit and been happy with the speech recognition accuracy. I understand that the SR feature is based on Whisper, which is OpenAI's AI SR model.

Yes, it asks you to enter your OpenAI API key. I should have shown that step in my video!

Thank you, Michael, for mentioning Whispering. It's indeed very nice: https://www.proz.com/forum/cafetran_support/368120-using_whisperings_voice_recognition_with_cafetran_espresso.html

(Although it didn't recognize "CafeTran Espresso" 🤭.)

Is it possible to create a "macro" for CafeTran Espresso? Or can Whispering be taught to recognize "CafeTran Espresso"?

Hmm, I don't think Whispering has any way to teach it how to spell stuff yet, which Talon can easily do, btw. However, dictating in Dutch isn't as good in Talon as in Whispering.

However, if you're feeling adventurous, and are on Windows (which I know you're not), you could have a look at "GPT_cURL.ahk" mentioned here: https://forums.knowbrainer.com/forum/third-party-command-utilities-vocola-unimacro-voicepower-python/3409-openai-s-transcription-api-beginner-level-interaction-and-early-user-experience (whose developer is looking into ways to teach Whisper how to spell hard words, and other crazy stuff)

Also, I have just done a bunch of testing with Spanish and German, and Whispering did just as well with those languages as with Dutch and English.

My current setup is to use Talon for voice commands and dictation in English, and Whispering for dictating in Dutch.
