Source text - English For the first time in the history of the United Nations, the September High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development in New York offered a high-profile opportunity to discuss at ministerial level the realities of migration, its major development opportunities and its challenges. Estimates suggest that there are at least 190 million migrants in an increasingly interconnected world. With more nations affected by migration than at any time before in history, evidence is mounting of the development benefits of migration for migrants’ sending and receiving societies. In the words of Secretary General, Koffi Annan, “governments are beginning to see international migration through the prism of opportunity rather than of fear”.
While many observers had feared a divisive North/South debate, the dominant message expressed in New York was in fact a shared one: migration is a regional and global phenomenon; it poses the challenge of shared responsibilities and common interests between governments of the north and south; it is a vital component in tackling issues of human rights, human security and human development in the 21st century.
The Dialogue came at a time when migration consistently tops the political, economic and social agendas across the world. Governments have indeed been wondering whether they should coordinate their migration policies rather than try to deal with the global flows individually and how to maximize the benefits of migration and development.

All about me
My undergraduate studies started out in Lund in southern Sweden where I studied Italian language and literature followed by studies in general literature and, in the end, history. The result was an MA in Italian language and literature and an MA in history, as well as some extra credits in general literature. After the university degree I continued with doctoral studies in history at Lund University. After only one semester as a doctoral researcher at the Department of History in Lund, I continued to Florence to the European University Institute of the European Union, to do the Ph.D. in history there, with a focus on political rituals in the nationalist period during the 19th century.
After my Ph.D. I taught Modern European History at Halmstad College in Sweden for 2 years. Then I decided to stay on full-time in Italy and to become a freelance translator starting my own business. I work as a translator now since around 10 years, doing also revisions, football (soccer) interpreting and general interpreting when needed.
I am also a sommelier. I have developed seminars about wine terminology in English with fellow translators and sommeliers. This lead to the seminar Words & Wine with FISAR in Florence two years ago. This seminar was then developed to a more translator focused seminar last year with the title Words at the Winery. This all happened in connection with me being elected the president of the regional section, AITI Toscana, of AITI (the Italian Association of Translators and Interpreters) early in 2014. Words at the Winery was organized once by AITI Toscana at Il Borro close to Arezzo and once in the autumn by AITI Campania at Feudi di San Gregorio close to Avellino. Together with another sommelier friend I also teach wine in English at the courses for Fisar.
