Very basic question about TagEditor

I have previously used Trados successfully in a Word environment. Now I am starting to use TagEditor and it seems that I have to manually add the tags back into matches from previous jobs. Can this be right?

For example, this is what TagEditor shows me when I open a segment:

Source: TAG I am a foreign text exactly the TAG same as one you translated before TAG
Target: I am the translation that you did before

Do I really have to move the cursor to the beginning, middle and end of the segment to add back the tags? Can the software not automatically give me:

Target: TAG I am the translation TAG that you did before TAG

You missed nothing, just unlucky, but this does not happen with all the projects in tageditor.
Also, beware of the order of tags.
For convenience, it is better to show the tag in partial mode and use the shortcuts.

Maybe you are missing nothing, Trados (TagEditor) in Word environment uses the format/style without "visible" tags (i. e. bold is bold without any external settings), while if you translate a Word file in TagEditor (Word app is not running), TE needs to use all the formatting tags as the basic text is plain text.

Basically, if you use TM created during translation in Word, most safe is to apply it to translations done in Word again only, otherwise the only option might be to reinser... See more

Different segmentation Jan 1, 2010

I've had similar problems with tags at the beginning and end of segments. Apparently, segmentation is slightly different in Word and Tag Editor and leading or trailing internal tags may be skipped. This is especially visible (and irritating) when you have TTX files and export unknown segments while analysing in Workbench to an RTF file. You translate the RTF file and expect all 100% matches in Tag Editor, but it is not always so.

Thanks for your answers. Not what I wanted to hear though...

First they ruin Word and now they ruin Trados, what next?!!!

If you mean that you need to change your approach from Word to Tageditor, then it is neither ruining of something, nor a really big problem. Properly formatted documents do not have much of them.
