- Fenomenele de silenţiere a genelor au furnizat ştiinţei plantelor noi instrumente pentru descoperirea mecanismelor epigenetice care reglează expresia genelor. Un aspect remarcabil al silenţierii genelor este diversitatea mecanismelor care apar, ca fiind rezultatul a numeroase interacţii între acizii nucleici care se află în nucleu dar şi în citoplasmă. Studii recente au pus în evidenţă noi direcţii cu privire la reglarea elementelor transpozabile. De exemplu, la Caenorhabditis elegans, elementele transpozabile sunt silenţiate post-transcripţional în timp ce elementele transpozabile de la Arabidopsis sunt „silenţiate” prin factori de remodelare ai cromatinei. Inaktivierung von Genen
Wenn Gene inaktiv werden, ohne dass sich der entsprechende DNA-Abschnitt verändert hat, spricht man von gene silencing. Dabei handelt es sich nicht um ein spezielles Phänomen in transgenen Pflanzen, sondern um natürliche Mechanismen, mit deren Hilfe Pilze, Tiere und Pflanzen ihre eigenen Gene regulieren. Sie können sich damit aber auch gegen fremdes Erbmaterial zur Wehr setzen.
