La dyspnée est une difficulté respiratoire (sensation de manque d'air) qui peut être d'origine cardiaque. Elle se manifeste à l'effort, en position couchée ou sans raison précise, même la nuit.

La dyspnée survient lorsque la demande ventilatoire (l'entrée d'oxygène et la sortie de dioxyde de carbone) du corps est plus élevée que ce que les poumons peuvent fournir ou que le travail respiratoire est augmenté par des problèmes ou anomalies. Les causes exactes peuvent être diverses : une laryngite, un corps étranger dans les voies respiratoires, l'obésité (causant une compression de la cage thoracique), des problèmes cardiaques congénitaux (tétralogie de Fallot)...
