English term

caldera

GBK English to Spanish Science Geology
Definition from CENGAGE Learning:
A vast depression at the top of a volcanic cone, formed when an eruption substantially empties the reservoir of magma beneath the cone's summit. Eventually the summit collapses inward, creating a caldera. A caldera may be more than 15 kilometers in diameter and more than 1000 meters deep.
Example sentences:
Subsequent eruptions from the Long Valley magma chamber were confined within the caldera with extrusions of relatively hot (crystal-free) rhyolite 700,000 to 600,000 years ago as the caldera floor was upwarped to form the resurgent dome followed by extrusions of cooler, crystal-rich moat rhyolite at 200,000-year intervals (500,000, 300,000, and 100,000 years ago) in clockwise succession around the resurgent dome. (USGS)
Calderas tend to form after a series of large eruptions. Usually a new volcano starts to grow inside, eventually covering it. (About.com: Geology)
Over the course of several hundred years following the creation of the caldera, rain and snow filled the basin to a depth of 1,943 feet (592 meters). Crater Lake today is the nation’s deepest lake. (Crater lake)

Discussion

Daniela Lara Aug 2, 2009:
ahms ok, thanks Enrique
Enrique Cavalitto Aug 2, 2009:
Objective Hi Daniela, the idea is to provide a proper translation, a definition and at least an example sentence, all in Spanish. Once entered into the glossary, it will be possible to correlate this term with its equivalent in the other languages where entries were made. The GBK program includes currently 43 languages.

Regarding the translation, there are at least two alternatives suggested "caldera" and "caldera volcánica", even though only the second was entered as an answer. If someone thinks "caldera" alone would make a better glossary entry, then it should be suggested as a separate answer.

Regards,
Enrique
Daniela Lara Aug 1, 2009:
I don't get it, are we supposed to translate this term (caldera) into English? or to find a better term for it in Spanish?

agree Ray Ables : just "caldera" in my opinion

agree marthaig : Caldera volcánica OK

agree Rodrigo Gandara : Dentro del un contexto geológico, caldera es suficiente, pues no hay calderas de otro origen que el volcánico. Dentro de otros contextos, quizá convendría complementar con **volcánico**.

agree caere : caldera sólo es suficiente
