ایستر اگ (Easter Egg) در معنی لغوی به معنی تخم مرغ عید پاک است. یکی از رسومی که در کشور‌های مسیحی برای عید پاک (Easter) انجام می‌شود، بازی‌ای به نام Easter Egg Hunt یا پیدا کردن تخم‌مرغ‌های عید پاک است. در این بازی، تعداد زیادی تخم‌مرغ تزئین شده و رنگی (در قدیم تخم‌مرغ آب‌پز و در دوران جدید‌تر تخم‌مرغ‌های شکلاتی) در فضای بزرگی پنهان می‌شود تا کودکان در یک زمان محدود به دنبال آنها بگردند و به افرادی که تخم‌مرغ‌های بیشتری پیدا کنند یا تخم‌مرغ‌های زیادی از یک رنگ داشته باشند و... جایزه‌ی اضافه‌ای هم تعلق می‌گیرد. در واقع واژه Easter Egg یا Egg Hunt برای غربی‌ها، یادآور پیدا کردن اشیاء پنهان‌شده‌ای است که خودشان به تنهایی هم حکم یک جایزه را دارند. در دوران جدید هم وقتی صحبت از ایستر اگ‌های رسانه‌ها می‌شود، منظور شوخی‌ها یا نکات جالبی است که سازندگان، آن را از قصد در محصولشان پنهان کرده‌اند تا مخاطبان آنها را پیدا کنند.
