English term

relict

English to Portuguese Science Geology geomorphology
How to translate Relict in a geological perspective? This is used to explain the coral reef is not currently in positive net accretion ("growing"), but it is actually a preserved structure from the past.

This excerpt is from an article I'm one of the authors: "Radiocarbon dating of coral clasts in cores also clearly demonstrates that the present reef surface is essentially a relict feature"
I was never happy with "estrutura antiga/relicta" which is what we end up using.
