(initial) approach area/segment
Not sure if this relates to flights or shipping.
approach area if it's about shipping routes and port traffic
See: http://is.gd/Kfrx24 or http://is.gd/kEpIu4
initial approach area is defined by the DOD & NATO as: "An area of defined width lying between the last preceding navigational fix or dead reckoning position and either the facility to be used for making an instrument approach or a point associated with such a facility that is used for demarcating the termination of initial approach."

If flights are involved, also see the following for initial approach segment:

Might be an option, but... never can be too certain.

: My take would be 'approach area'. Not quite sure about this, but I would tend to interpret 'segment' in this context as being part of a larger area.

: I would indeed also go with 'approach area'.

: 'Segment' feels like a synonym of 'area', just more precisely defined

: In Rotterdam is de Nederlandse term voor het aanloopgebied 'Maas Aanloop' en de Engelse term 'Maas Approach'.

approach area
I am no specialist in this area, but think it is probably 'approach area'.
See e.g.
'In addition, the airport itself has special considerations for low visibility operations including different lighting for ***approach area***, runways, and taxiways as well as the location of emergency equipment.' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrument_approach )
• 'initial approach area': 'An area of defined width lying between the last preceding navigational fix or dead reckoning position and either the facility to be used for making an instrument approach or a point associated with such a facility that is used for demarcating the termination of initial approach.'
• 'circling approach area': 'The area in which aircraft circle to land under visual conditions after completing an instrument approach.'
