Dutch term
Sofinummer
Dutch to English

Law: Taxation & Customs
Does it make sense to translate 'sofinummer' in a Dutch agreement, and is VAT number correct?
The context is an agreement with a British lecturer who will speak at a Dutch conference.
Any suggestions are welcome

Social&fiscal number
This number is used by both Social services and the fiscal authorities. I would use the term 'sofi number' and add a footnote.

: exactly, it would more sense to translate it directly into social & fiscal, because then it it also explained why it is an abbreviation ..

social security number
Sofinummer is not a VAT number. It might be an idea to leave it untranslated and put an sort expanation (social security number in the Netherlands) in brackets.

: Nee, heeft niet met VAT te maken, maar wel met de belastingdienst en dus niet alleen Ziekenfonds.

Sofi number
Ik vind het zelf niet zo mooi, maar tegen mijn verwachting in aardig wat resultaten op Google. Een voorbeeld:
If you intend to work in the Netherlands, you must register with the tax office (Belastingdienst). The Belastingdienst will give you a Sofi-number. A Sofi-number is necessary for deducting your taxes and social security contributions. Please make sure that you have registered at the town hall before you go and ask for your Sofi-number.

: Sofi number is what most foreign workers in NL know and use. I would suggest: sofi number (i.e. social & fiscal number)... for explanation.

Sofi (National Insurance) number
IMO best left untranslated, but you might mention that it is comparable to the UK National Insurance number.
Discussion
VAT number was a stupid thought of mine for a possible translation, I was sleep at the time of asking the question.
In practice the meaning of asking a lecturer who occasionally comes to the Netherlands for his sofinummer seems not to make sense, cause he/she has no Dutch sofinummer. I am curious what the legal meaning is for Non-Dutch people in this case.
