2.7.2 Column cleanup prior to analysis
The concentrated solvent extract was transferred to a pre-conditioned flash chromatography column containing approximately 1g of activated silica gel. The compounds were eluted with 3ml of pentane/DCM (2:1).

An aliquot of the extract was then taken and analysed for total hydrocarbons and individual n-alkanes by large volume injection (LVI) GC flame ionisation detection (GC-FID) and one taken to be analysed for PAH concentrations by GC mass spectrometry (GC-MS) selected ion monitoring (SIM).
