글자 그대로, 선입선출법은 재고 자산 중에 먼저 매입한 것을 매출원가로 보는 방법이다. 선입선출법은 매입순법이라고도 불리며, 가장 먼저 취득된 것부터 순차로 판매하는 방법이다. 기말재고품은 최근에 취득한 것으로 보고 재고자산의 원가를 배분한다고 한다. 여러 단가의 재고품이 실제로는 어떤 순서로 출고되든, 장부상 먼저 입고된 것부터 순서대로 출고되는 것으로 간주하여 출고단가를 결정하는 원가주의 평가방법 이다. 따라서 재고품은 비교적 최근에 입고된 물품의 원가로 구성되며, 출고품의 가격은 일찍 입고된 물품의 원가에 의해 결정-표시된다. 그러므로 단가가 서로 다른 수종의 동일계열 재고품이 있을 경우에는 장부상의 잔고란에 종류별로 나누어져 있어야 한다. 물가가 상승할 때는 이 방법에 의해 원가배분을 하는 경비용을 낮게 평가하고, 이익과 세금을 보다 과대평가하게 한다.
